USENET Newsgroups:
A USENET newsgroup is an on-line discussion group found on the Internet. There are thousands of newsgroups covering every topic imaginable and several of interest in the area of cognitive systems (e.g., comp.ai.neural-nets or sci.cognitive). You can read messages from other readers, reply to their messages, and post your own messages. To access a newsgroup, you must have a newsreader. Most modern web browsers (e.g., Netscape and Internet Explorer) have built in newsreaders. There are also many stand-alone freeware, shareware, and commercial newsreaders. You must also have access to a news server (also known as an NNTP server). Please, contact your system administrator or Internet service provider for details. If your system is properly configured, just click on the desired newsgroup listed below. For more information about USENET newsgroups, try PC Webopaedia.
Mailing Lists:
A mailing list is a list of e-mail addresses of individuals interested in a specific topic. The list moderator broadcasts messages to the list of subscribers. The moderator decides which messages merit distribution. To subscribe to a mailing list, contact the list moderator at the e-mail address or web page given below. For more information on mailing lists, try Listtool.
List Servers:
A list server is something between a newsgroup and a mailing list. You must be a subscriber to read messages on the list, but the list server automatically redistributes messages to the discussion group, so the interaction is more like a newsgroup. To subscribe to a list server, send an e-mail message to the listed subscription address with the appropriate subscription message. To post a message to the list, send your message to the posting e-mail address given below. This often requires that you be a member of the list. There are three popular list server types: Listserv, Listproc and Majordomo. For more information on list servers, try Webcom.
